정신장애진단 및 통계편람(DSM-IV)에서의 발달장애
미국정신의학회(American Psychiatric Association) 가 독자적으로 제작한 정신장애 진단 및 통계 편람(DSM-IV: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th ed., 1994)에서는 ‘일반적으로 유아기, 아동기, 청소년기에 처음으로 진단되는 장애(disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence)’라는 분류항목에 다음과 같은 장애들을 포함시키고 있는데, 이 중에서 광범위성 발달장애(전반적 발달장애)라는 항목에서 발달장애라는 용어를 사용하고 있다: ①정신지체(mental retardation), ②학습장애(learning disorders), ③운동기술장애(motor skills disorder), ④의사소통장애(communication disorder), ⑤광범위성 발달장애(전반적 발달장애; pervasive developmental disorders), ⑥주의력 결핍 및 파괴적 행동 장애(attention-deficit and disruptive behavior disorders), ⑦유아기 또는 아동기 초기의 급식 및 섭식 장애(feeding and eating disorders of infancy and early childhood), ⑧틱장애(tic disorders), ⑨배설장애(elimination disorders), ⑩유아기, 아동기, 청소년기의 기타 장애(other disorders of infancy, childhood, or adolescence).
